Federal REgulatory Attorney, We ACt

Location: Washington, D.C. (Hybrid: Minimum 3 days in D.C. office or on the Hill)

Description: West Harlem Environmental Action a/k/a WE ACT for Environmental Justice is a nonprofit, community-based advocacy organization that works to build healthy communities by ensuring that people of color and/or low-income residents participate meaningfully in the creation of sound and fair environmental health and protection policies and practices. WE ACT is a nationally recognized leader in the environmental justice (EJ) movement and the only national EJ organization with a permanent presence in Washington DC. WE ACT is known for its work in the areas of children’s environmental health; government accountability; and climate, energy and environmental justice.

WE ACT seeks a Federal Regulatory Attorney with a demonstrated passion for justice and equity issues based out of our Washington, D.C. Office. This role reports to the Federal Policy Director and will:

  • Coordinate with the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ), Department of Energy (DOE) and the Federal Regulatory Commission (FERC) in the successful review and implementation of amended regulations; (including categorical exemptions for rebuilding transmission lines under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA); ensuring amendments are implemented, adapted and enforced appropriately and with EJ communities in mind.

  • Serve as WE ACT’s point person on regulatory analysis and communication with federal regulators and policymakers, developing and maintaining strong relationships, identifying opportunities and priorities and establishing WE ACT as the go-to resource for policymakers, regulators, coalition members and other stakeholders around environmental justice policy.

  • Provide testimony and support administrative advocacy to ensure strong implementation of existing federal laws and regulations.

  • Work collaboratively with the federal government affairs team – developing thought leadership papers, policy designs, technical reports, analytical tools and recommendations while ensuring through an equity and justice lens informing how laws are shaped and who they apply to.

  • Provide technical assistance and referral services as needed to members of the Environmental Justice Leadership Forum, an alliance of 55 environmental justice groups representing 22 states that is convened by WE ACT.

  • In collaboration with the Federal Policy Director, develop and implement a comprehensive federal regulatory affairs plan in support of the policy priorities of the Federal Policy Office and to define short- and long-term goals and objectives related to WE ACT’s policy impact.

  • Convene and facilitate meetings and working groups with EJ and environmental NGO partners, experts, advocates, ratepayer and consumer groups, manufacturers, business organizations and associations, outside counsel and others to develop relationships and strengthen networks in order to address barriers to equity-centered environmental policy.

  • Manage and oversee a legal intern and fellow (contingent on funding availability.)

 

Government Affairs Director, We ACt

Location: Washington, D.C. (Hybrid: Minimum 3 days in D.C. office or on the Hill)

WE ACT is seeking a Government Affairs Manager in our Washington D.C. Office, this role reports to the Senior Director of Strategy and Federal Policy and will be responsible in developing and executing an impactful and comprehensive government relations and thought leadership strategy on behalf of WE ACT. This position will be a registered lobbyist and will include the following responsibilities:

  • Building trusted relationships with Administration Officials, Congressional offices, caucuses, and committees.

  • Educating Federal Officials and staff about WE ACT, the Environmental Justice Leadership Forum (EJ Forum), environmental justice issues and leading lobbying efforts to advance key priorities.

  • Collaborating with Federal Policy Office teams to identify, cultivate and mobilize new federal legislative allies and champions that may not be familiar with environmental justice issues.

  • Identifying and securing opportunities for WE ACT staff and EJ Forum members to engage with Congressional and committee leadership and their staff, i.e., organizing lobby days.

  • Identifying, assessing, and providing recommendations to mitigate or respond to federal policy issues that may impact WE ACT, EJ Forum members or the aims of the environmental justice movement.

  • Providing guidance on strategies and communication plans to engage federal policymakers on key initiatives.

  • Supporting efforts to build and grow Congressional awareness and the reputation of the EJ Forum.

  • Drafting materials such as talking points, bill analyses, leave behinds, reports, memos and presentations for Congressional meetings.

  • Tracking relevant activity on Capitol Hill and across the Administration and regularly engaging in rapid response and strategic outreach and interventions.

  • Representing WE ACT on Capitol Hill, federal policy coalitions, working groups and other collaborations.

  • Developing and maintaining expertise in emerging environmental justice and federal policy issues.

  • Contributing to the Federal Policy Office thought leadership, including but not limited to: writing comment letters, sign-on letters, blog posts, opinion pieces, and position papers.

  • Leading the Government Affairs team in identifying engagement opportunities, agenda setting and supervising the Legislative Coordinator.

  • Performing other duties as assigned

 

Business development director, veloz

Location: Veloz is based in Sacramento, California. This position is eligible for remote work in the U.S. with a strong perference for California and some nationwide travel expected (up to 10% annually)

Description: Reporting to the Executive Director and partnering with the Veloz team and Board leadership, the Business Development Director plays a critical role in making the electric for all vision a reality by driving an ambitious revenue strategy. Veloz’s current budget ranges from $2.5M to $5M, depending upon the Electric For All campaign cycle, and our strategic plan sets a target of 20% annual growth in each of the next three years.

The candidate in this position will build upon an influential existing network of members, lead Veloz’s revenue generation efforts and annual member-focused industry events and build new funding partnerships with corporations, philanthropies and government. Description: The Senior Director ensures effective development and timely preparation of WWF-US strategies for federal and sub-national climate policy.
